The Atascadero Printery Foundation is busy! Since winning the property in the SLO County auction, we have had two major fundraising focuses — protecting the building and the property from further damage, and paying our mortgage! Yep, we are real homeowners now!

We are continually tending to the lot and the exterior of the building to prevent and repair damage caused by vandals, vermin and weather. Left in its current state, it is vulnerable to these elements and damage will be accelerated unless we take action. We are working on a prototype to secure the large windows on the first and second floors to prevent easy access for these destructive elements. When we get our prototype dialed in, we will hold a sponsorship campaign to allow community supporters to help us by sponsoring a window at about a $250 cost.

Sealing up the building is a major need, because we are being assaulted by vandals who see fit to destroy anything they can now that their time of freely entering and inhabiting the building is quickly coming to an end. Among the recent damage, we had a 5-gallon bucket of primer opened and tossed down the stairs. It exploded all over the walls, damaging the original stained trim that speaks so clearly to the dignity invested in the original construction. Our all-volunteer board is working tirelessly to get this problem solved.

Along with the manual labor involved in protecting our community investment, we are fundraising to support that cause as well as pay our mortgage.

On Tuesday, July 4, we hosted the beer and wine booth at the Atascadero 4th of July Bluegrass Freedom Festival. It was a fantastic time and we were busy for the four hours of the event. We sold out of almost everything we had to drink, and in the end we made new friends and found great support among the community. We look forward to doing it again next year. A BIG thank you to Santa Maria Brewing Co. for supplying our beer, and to the wine donors, including Ancient Peaks and Derby.

Coming up, on Saturday, July 29, we are hosting the first-ever Atascadero Printery Cow Pie Bingo and we invite you to join us in this fundraiser. We are selling 500 tickets in a game where nature makes the call. We will create a giant grid on the Atascadero Printery site and let a heifer meander through the lot until she finds herself comfortable to drop a cow pie in one lucky square. The winner of the square stands to take home $1,000 as the winning prize. As a consolation prize, another winner will receive a $300 gift certificate to The Carlton Hotel.

Please support us by buying your ticket today! You don’t need to be present to win your $1,000, but the raffle for The Carlton Hotel gift certificate will be given to one lucky winner at the event. See our Facebook Event page for up to date information!

Also, just like our project to restore the Atascadero Printery is a marathon, not a sprint, we are carrying that theme into 2018 with the very first marathon in Atascadero! Along with event host Vitality Fitness Delivered, we are holding the Tent City Marathon on Sunday, March 25, 2018.

The event will feature four big runs — a full marathon, 1/2 marathon, 10K, and a 5K — through our beautiful landscape here in Atascadero. Please join us early on this!

Again, and always, we appreciate your support as we carry out our mission to reclaim, restore, and repurpose the Atascadero Printery Building as a multipurpose, community-use facility. Please join us on Saturday, July 29 for COW PIE BINGO!
